Frequently Asked Questions

What Can I Expect in the Initial Consultation?

An initial consultation is a welcoming and informal first step in your therapy journey. It's an opportunity for us to get to know each other, explore what brings you to therapy, and discuss your goals and concerns. During this conversation, I'll explain my approach to therapy, answer any questions you may have, and ensure you feel comfortable with the process. Together, we'll determine if we're a good fit and can schedule our first session within a week to ensure timely access to support. This session is all about creating a safe space for you to start your journey with clarity and confidence.

Let's unpack

What is Therapy?

The term psychotherapy comes from the Greek words psyche, meaning "soul" or "mind," and therapeia, meaning "healing" or "treatment." It literally translates to "healing of the mind" or "soul treatment." Through structured conversations and therapeutic techniques, individuals can gain deeper insight into their experiences, identify patterns, and develop strategies to manage challenges more effectively. Whether addressing:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Trauma
  • Life transitions

This process fosters self-awareness and emotional well-being, helping clients move forward with clarity and purpose.

What's Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours are deeply interconnected, each shaping and influencing one another.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a structured, goal-oriented form of talk therapy that helps individuals understand how their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are connected. It focuses on identifying unhelpful patterns of thinking and replacing them with more balanced, constructive ones. CBT provides practical tools and strategies to manage challenges like anxiety, depression, and stress by breaking problems down into smaller, manageable parts. Through this process, clients learn to approach life's difficulties with greater intention, gaining skills to navigate emotions and behaviours in healthier, more empowering ways.

What's Internal Family Systems (IFS)

You’re the product of various “parts” (or past versions of yourself), working toward harmony and restoring balance.

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a therapeutic approach that views the mind as made up of different parts, each with its own thoughts, emotions, and roles. It operates on the belief that everyone has a core Self that is calm, compassionate, and capable of leading healing. In IFS, clients explore their inner world to better understand and connect with these parts—whether they are protective, wounded, or reactive—and work toward creating harmony among them. This process, approached with curiosity and intention, helps individuals heal past wounds, reduce inner conflict, and foster a greater sense of balance and self-acceptance.

Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT)

Your emotions are the language in which your body communicates to you.

Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) helps individuals better understand, process, and transform their emotions to improve mental health and relationships. It views emotions as essential guides to our needs and experiences, emphasizing the importance of exploring feelings with curiosity and intention. Through this process, clients learn to identify, express, and regulate emotions in healthy ways, fostering deeper self-awareness and emotional resilience. Whether addressing personal struggles or relational challenges, EFT provides a supportive space for healing and growth by helping clients connect with their emotions and use them as tools for positive change.
